I’m allowing myself a wee one day blog break. Sort of. Too busy enjoying summer in Germany. There’s a swim to be swum and ice cream to be eaten and these things have to be taken very, very seriously! Trust me to get my priorities right…
Also: trust me, that I can’t shut up. So much for my blog break… I’m still here. And I’ve got a short piece of writing for you about clouds. Totally not what I’m thinking of right now… That’s the beauty about sending away poems and stories for consideration. I never know what will be published. Plus, I never know when the pieces will appear.
The haibun below was published in Whispers and Echoes today. Here’s the link, in case you want to have a look at the online magazine: https://whispersandechoesmag.home.blog/2022/07/27/clouds-britta-benson/
And here’s my haibun:
Clouds
We have tried to see what’s not there since before the beginning of time even ended. Sky, our open minded companion, our vast context of who knows what, invites liminal thoughts from all sides to puff up like smoke signs. Could those intriguing tufts and fluffballs really be just gathered up water drops and ice crystals floating high above our heads? Surely, there’s more to this white quickening. I’m intrigued. I stare. I see.
Gulls glide through new ghosts,
footprints of past souls traverse,
release future hope.
Happy Wednesday to you all, and I’ll see you here tomorrow if you wish!
PS: In case you like my haibun, I’ll have another one in Whispers and Echoes next Wednesday and the Wednesday after that.
I like your haibun. It’s a form I hadn’t encountered before. Good candidate for the poetry challenge. Hmmm…. Glad you’re having a fun vacation!

Thanks, Rebecca. I love writing haibun. A haiku seems so short, it’s great to put it into context and have a wee passage to go with it. I’m already looking forward to your August poetry challenge. You always pick such interesting forms and themes!

Thanks, Britta. I’ve been reading haibun all afternoon and loving it! Most definitely will be the form for next month. Can’t begin to thank you for introducing me to it.

I got introduced to the form on another blog, actually, on quite a number of blogs writing about syllabic poetry… I love how we all inspire each other. There’s so much to be learned and discovered! I am a much better writer due to all the interesting things and ideas I have come across in the bloggosphere!

Congratulations! I do enjoy a haibun for the same reasons you describe. And this one is lovely! (Also glad you have time to swim and enjoy ice cream!)

Thanks, Valerie. Oh, I do take my ‘study’ of ice cream flavours very, very seriously! I reckon, after my daily swim, I deserve a wee treat. My form of self medicated happiness.

Thanks, Terveen. I will catch up with all of your posts I have missed. They’re all sitting in my reader. Right now, I’m enjoying summer too much. For someone like me, living in Scotland, this monthlong break in Germany feels like a phenomenal treat! No ice cream flavour will escape my curiosity!!! After all that swimming, I deserve a wee treat…
